What is SFP transceivers Sep 22, 2018

The SFP ( Small Form-Factor Pluggable) transceiver, also known as Mini-GBIC, is a compact,hot-pluggable optical transceiver used for both telecommunication and data communications applications. SFP transceivers provide flexible and cost-saving solution for networks and datacenters. Due to its smaller size, the SFP has replaced the gigabit interface converface converter (GBIC) in most applications, and is sometimes referred to as a Mini-GBIC by some vendors.

The SFP transceiver is specified by the MSA (Multisource Agreement), which was developed and is followed by different transceiver manufacturers. It is a popular industry format jointly developed and supported by many network component vendors.

SFP transceivers exist supporting SONET, Gigabit Ethernet, Fibre Channel, and other communications standards. An SFP interface on networking hardware is a modular (plug-and-play) slot for a variable, media-specific transceiver in order to connect a fiber optic cable or sometimes a copper cable.

There are single-mode SFP module and multi-mode SFP module, BIDI SFP, CWDM SFP and DWDM SFP according to the cable type, which allows users to select the appropriate transceiver according to the required optical range for the network. Transmission rate of SFP module is available from 100Mbps up to 4Gbps or more, distance support from 550M to 120KM.

SFP transceivers support DDM (digital diagnostics monitoring) functions, also known as DOM (digital optical monitoring). This feature gives users the ability to monitor the real-time parameters of SFP, such as optical output power, optical input power, temperature, laser-bias current and transceiver supply voltage.
